By Tenci Reid

Hello, my name is Elizabeth Reid, also known as Tenci. I am a journalism major focusing on digital broadcast. I was raised in Maryland by my mother, a pastor, and my brother, who owns a media production business. I am passionate about various forms of creative expression, including music, photography, videography and clothing design. The growth in technology has created new ways for me to learn more about my passions and interests and share them with others. Through social media, I could promote my clothing brand, interview and promote musical artists, and connect with people I wouldn’t have met otherwise.
The media has a significant influence on so many people’s lives, including my own. Along with the positive aspects of social media, there are adverse effects, and I’ve become more aware of how they have impacted me subconsciously. Every day there are new trends, and the media can amplify the pressure. You may start comparing yourself when trying to fit in, leading to self-doubt and mental health issues. Therefore, developing healthy social media habits is essential.
I am excited to work on this project exploring child development in the African American community. I look forward to learning more and sharing tools and information to help parents and children navigate the world of social media while protecting their mental health.
